Hi, I am Mateus
Project manager. Parent. Expat based in Lisbon, Portugal.
A few years back, I moved here with my family. What began as a temporary assignment gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Began
Moving to Portugal wasn't part of our long-range plan. Like many international moves, it started as a job opportunity and soon grew into something far more significant.
The initial months were demanding — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Routine tasks felt more tangled than they needed to be.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, uncertainty, and a lot of learning by doing. Yet gradually, routines took shape. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began building something that felt steady.
Why I Created MellowOakThread
Most online resources were either corporate relocation guidance or shallow tourism content. What was missing was an honest, everyday family perspective.
This site aims to fill that void — practical advice drawn from real life in Portugal.

This site offers:
